About

2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014, based on 1024 by Veewo Studio, itself a variation on Threes by Asher Vollmer. This site runs an independent build of the open-source game engine, released under the MIT licence, with a solver added on top.

The variations

Beyond the classic 4×4 board, this site adds its own variations of the game. Each one keeps the core idea — slide, merge, reach the target tile — and changes one thing about it:

  • 3×3 — The same 2048, played on a 3×3 board instead of 4×4. Fewer cells fill up fast, so every move counts and the game ends sooner.
  • 5×5 — The same 2048, played on a 5×5 board instead of 4×4. More room to maneuver and longer games before the board fills up.
  • 1024 — The same 2048, but the winning tile is 1024 instead of 2048 — a shorter run to a win, with the same board and the same solver.
  • 8192 — The same 2048, but the winning tile is 8192 instead of 2048 — a longer run with two extra doublings, and the same board and solver.
  • Fibonacci — A 2048 variant where tiles carry Fibonacci numbers and only consecutive terms merge — 3 and 5 combine into 8, but 3 and 8 do not.
  • Hexagonal — The same 2048 rules on a hex-tiled board with six directions to move in instead of four.

All of them are also on the variations page.
